German CV: a clear chronology and accurate qualifications

For an application in Germany, make your career history easy to follow and use the language requested in the advertisement. A German-language application is not compulsory for every international role. What matters is a coherent account of your experience and qualifications, supported by the documents the employer actually requests.

Make the chronology understandable

List relevant roles with clear dates, employers, responsibilities and achievements. A reverse chronological structure is often practical, but follow explicit employer instructions. Explain a career change through transferable evidence instead of hiding previous work. A gap does not justify inventing employment: describe relevant training or projects only if they happened.

Explain qualifications precisely

Keep the original qualification name and add an understandable translation where helpful. Do not claim that a foreign degree is officially equivalent to a German qualification without the appropriate recognition. Regulated professions have separate requirements. The employer’s requested certificates and professional recognition should be checked through the relevant official services.

Select language and personal information carefully

State language skills honestly and distinguish a certified level from a personal estimate. A photo is not a universal requirement: consider the posting and privacy implications rather than treating it as mandatory. Avoid unnecessary sensitive personal information. Application conventions differ between employers, industries and international teams.

A practical adaptation example

Fictional example: a maintenance technician moving into production coordination can describe real scheduling, safety documentation and communication with operators. They should not claim management responsibility or a German professional certification they never obtained. Show how each genuine activity prepares them for the target tasks and identify training still needed.

Check consistency before sending

Compare dates and titles across the CV, cover letter, certificates and professional profile. Use readable files and the submission channel requested by the employer. A CV review cannot validate a visa, recognition of qualifications or a job offer. AI suggestions should be checked against real evidence, not copied as new facts about your career.
